I found an interesting image on Digg today. It shows the dominant colors used by corporate companies in logo design, especially the color blue. Large corporations such as Wal-Mart, Viacom and AT&T all use a blue logo. What interested me most about this image however was that the four most commonly used colors for these logos are blue, yellow, red and green. Why these four colors? In the human visual system, the four most important colors are in fact blue, yellow, red and green. Using these colors, our visual system can code for any color in the visible light spectrum. These colors are so important that according to cross-cultural linguistic data if only four colors exist in a language they will be the English equivalent of “blue”, “yellow”, “red” and “green”.
We ♥ Type
A reason for everyone to love Typography, behold!
The Periodic Table of Typefaces..
I can’t be the only one who thinks this should be posted in every single lecture hall around campus alongside the Periodic Table of Elements, am I right? Am I right!? This piece of typographical love was created by the designers at SquidSpot where wall vinyl, poster, t-shirt, and wallpaper versions of the table can be found. How did the ranking work?
Ranking was determined by statistically sorting and combining lists and opinions from the sites listed below. The final overall ranking was achieved depending on how many lists the particular typeface was presented on and its ranking on the lists (if the particular source used a ranking system; some did not, in which case just the typeface’s presence on the list boosted it’s overall score.) After averaging the typefaces appearances and rankings a composite score was given and the list was sorted on a spreadsheet then finally given an overall score of 1 through 100 based on its final resting position. Tedious? But oh so worth it.

Friday – ASGS Field Trip!
Friday was not only a day of Halloween festivities, but a mini field trip for the ASGS staff. We kicked off our little adventure with a trip to the new mural called “Chicano Legacy” on Peterson Hall, a celebration of Chicano culture in San Diego (check out the little Geisel tribute in the painting!) . Then we walked over to University Art Gallery’s Exhibit called Off the Beaten Path: Violence, Women, and Art. It focused on the lives women from all over the world , the unsung heroes that deal with violence both on the battlefield and in their homes. Sadly, we couldn’t take that many pictures in respect of the exhibit’s “No flash photos” rule. But the artwork was beautiful and creative, (check out Yoko Ono’s Cut Pieces if you go) and definitely thought-provoking. These women deal with domestic violence on a daily basis, and it’s difficult to imagine that no one is stopping the cycle or preventing it from happening. Overall, the exhibit is truly an eye-opening experience, and I highly recommend checking it out. Take action against domestic violence! If you want to learn more, check out the event’s info at http://universityartgallery.ucsd.edu/exhibitions/2009/09_offthebeatenpath.shtml. The exhibit ends its run on December 12th, so make sure to take your own little field trip before it’s too late! Trust me, it’s worth it.

Another featured art piece. If you look closely, each banner shows a woman doing daily tasks (I know, I didn't see it at first either).

All Hallows’ Eve
We took a little break last Friday for some fun Halloween festivities. Check out the photos below. In honor of former ASGS designers, Jordan & Justin, we went to the vendor fair to get some new vinyls. Nathan had the golden touch and got two rare Futurama vinyls. Next time, I am going to have him pick my Dunny blind boxes.

Drum roll, please…
We just hired our final addition to the ASGS. Irvin is our newest graphic artist (see photo – 2nd from left). He is a 3rd year, Warren College student and we are excited to have him join the team. You will be able to read more about him in his bio (posted on our bios page by the end of the week).

ASGS - the entire 09-10 team
In addition to Irvin joining us, we have been busy. You might have seen us at snapping photos at Bear Garden, handing out water at the Chancellor’s 5K Challenge, and volunteering at Family Weekend. There are more fun projects that we are wrapping up for the end of the quarter. Look out for the newest Bear Garden poster, Triton Tide logo, and All Campus Council Mixer collateral. We are even starting to discuss the newest designs for Sun God Festival 2010. It may be hard to believe, but the countdown has already begun for May14th…
Have a very fun and safe Halloween!

<3Vinylmations
As we all know, Melissa has been a big fan of dunnies ever since Justin and Jordan (former Graphic Artists) introduced her to the world of vinyl action figures. [See also: Melissa's desk, computer screen, AND bookcase.] Well, MY new obsession is with Disney’s new(ish) Vinylmation series! With several sets to choose from (Park, Urban, Holiday, etc.) how can you resist!? It’s like a design Disney dream. Mickey Mouse shaped vinyls printed with your favorite Disney aesthetics.
Epic.
Buy them online or at Disneyland Resort, but they are the cutest, coolest, illest little action figures you could imagine. So, collect them with me!
A.S. Press Conference!
Monday kicked off the first A.S. Press Conference of the year, and ASGS was there to liven up the festivities with “exclusive” press-access passes, complete with reporter Mr. Bear’s official stats and photo. Over 1,000 people scored these limited edition press passes, so watch out for them as you walk around campus. Congrats if you were able to get one! Mr. Bear would be very proud. Who knows, we might make more for next quarter’s press conference (I for one, found it very informative. Who knew it was possible for UCSD to get a football team within a year? Interesting right?). Make sure to come out to the next one! Keep on the lookout through our weekly updates, and make sure to check out all the happenings of Associated Students at http://as.ucsd.edu!

First Friday – School is back in session!
We just wrapped up Welcome Week and it has been busy. On Monday, we added Nathan (see photo below) to our design team and he has already been a great addition. He is taking charge on multiple projects and came at just the perfect time to lend a hand. Throughout the week, everyone has been designing, promoting up a storm, and mingling with new students at services fairs. In addition to work, classes began on Thursday, so the team has started the balancing act of work, school and extra-curricular activities. This week wrapped up strong with the First Friday Open House, a fun-filled, Candy Land themed fair, featuring the student services at the Price Center. A big “thank you” to the University Centers and First Friday committee. The event was a success. JenaLyn created special edition Candy Land Killer Cutouts, which are the first ones of the season. They were very limited edition, only 500 and they were gone before the event ended. We handed out hundreds of goodie bags with our general info, gum drops and official King Bear sticker. I hope everyone enjoys their candy and bears.
Phew…this was just Week 0, but I am excited to see how the rest of the quarter moves forward.
