Friday was not only a day of Halloween festivities, but a mini field trip for the ASGS staff. We kicked off our little adventure with a trip to the new mural called “Chicano Legacy” on Peterson Hall, a celebration of Chicano culture in San Diego (check out the little Geisel tribute in the painting!) . Then we walked over to University Art Gallery’s Exhibit called Off the Beaten Path: Violence, Women, and Art. It focused on the lives women from all over the world , the unsung heroes that deal with violence both on the battlefield and in their homes. Sadly, we couldn’t take that many pictures in respect of the exhibit’s “No flash photos” rule. But the artwork was beautiful and creative, (check out Yoko Ono’s Cut Pieces if you go) and definitely thought-provoking. These women deal with domestic violence on a daily basis, and it’s difficult to imagine that no one is stopping the cycle or preventing it from happening. Overall, the exhibit is truly an eye-opening experience, and I highly recommend checking it out. Take action against domestic violence! If you want to learn more, check out the event’s info at http://universityartgallery.ucsd.edu/exhibitions/2009/09_offthebeatenpath.shtml. The exhibit ends its run on December 12th, so make sure to take your own little field trip before it’s too late! Trust me, it’s worth it.

Entrance Sign at the UAG Exhibit

One of the featured art pieces at the exhibit. Yup, that's all made of real feathers!

Another featured art piece. If you look closely, each banner shows a woman doing daily tasks (I know, I didn't see it at first either).
