Asian Night Market '25

Case Study Triton Fest Print +3

Among Triton Fest’s most popular traditions, Asian Night Market transforms UC San Diego’s campus into a vibrant festival alive with food, music, and performance. Organized in collaboration with student groups, the event recreates the lively atmosphere of markets across Asia with more than 20 organizations contributing food stalls, cultural showcases, and live entertainment. Beyond being a late-night gathering, it serves as a celebration of community, identity, and creative expression. This dynamic blend of food, performance, and storytelling created a unique design challenge: how to capture the bustling energy of a night market while making the visuals feel inviting, cozy, and fun. Graphic artist Alice Lam brought her playful, minimalistic style to the project, using simple strokes to convey personality and warmth. The final poster composition featured mascots in action, anchored by lanterns, stalls, and a traditional gate. A muted, yet festive palette of deep blue, red, gold, and green balanced cultural tradition with modern student appeal.

Early drawings established the foundation for the mascots, logo, and event merchandise. Skip, one of Triton Fest’s mascots, was reimagined in a snake onesie holding a lantern to mark the Year of the Snake. Inspired by “cute, not scary” references, the sketch emphasized rounded forms and approachable features, ensuring the symbol of the year felt fun and friendly. Logo explorations experimented with several directions drawn from traditional Asian market signage: stacked lanterns, vertical signboards, and layered hybrid arrangements. While the reference imagery showcased dense, eclectic signage often seen in night markets, the sketches simplified those forms into bold designs that could scale easily across mediums. This phase extended beyond the poster since both mascot sketches and logo concepts were adapted into stickers, giving students a tangible way to interact with the branding.
